Karl and Charles are equivalent names. Karl's older brother, William VII, was killed and Karl was required to marry his brother's widow, Amelia. It's all there in my book.

Excerpt from:

http://www.historyfiles.co.uk/KingLists ... en-Marburg

1670 - 1730
Charles / Karl (I)

Brother of William VII. First to hire out troops to foreign powers.

1720

Charles' son, Frederick, is married to Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden. Having renounced the rights of absolute monarchy in return for being confirmed as queen, she now abdicates in favour of her husband. She had preferred the idea of a co-monarchy in the style of England under Mary II and William III, but this has not been allowed in Sweden since the fifteenth century. Parliamentary rule is reinstated in Sweden with the monarchy greatly limited in power.

Why would you want to do that? It only uses the English version of Karl, which is Charles. Even in Germany at that time sometimes people would address him as Charles, pronouncing it with a hard 'C', but spelling as the English one. I understand your confusion though and perhaps it might have been clearer if someone had simply written, Karl/Charles.

Further to the above, "From the Germanic name Karl, which was derived from a Germanic word meaning "man". However, an alternative theory states that it is derived from the common Germanic name element hari meaning "army, warrior".

The popularity of the name in continental Europe was due to the fame of Charles the Great (742-814), commonly known as Charlemagne, a king of the Franks who came to rule over most of Europe. His grandfather Charles Martel had also been a noted leader of the Franks. It was subsequently the name of several Holy Roman Emperors, as well as kings of France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Hungary (in various spellings). After Charlemagne, his name was adopted as a word meaning "king" in many Eastern European languages, for example Czech král, Hungarian király, Russian король (korol), and Turkish kral.

The name did not become common in Britain until the 17th century when it was borne by the Stuart king Charles I. It had been introduced into the Stuart royal family by Mary Queen of Scots, who had been raised in France."

To pinpoint his contribution to Bessler's work, in a place that's more authoritative and accessible than other places??

Hey axel,
I know this is beside the point, but a few months ago it seemed like you were really on to something. You were getting ready to do some building. How did it go?
Trying to turn the spinning in my brain into something useful before moving on to the next life.
