Mike Senior has passed on.

Post by John Collins »

Mike Senior performed heroically on my behalf, translating all the pieces of recorded history concerning Johann Bessler into English. It is his work that provided the English translation of Grundlicher Bericht, Apologia Poetica and Das triumphirend, plus of course the many letters to and from and about Bessler and the publications such Acta Eruditorum.

He passed away recently but I know his work on Bessler will not be forgotten. To repeat what I have written on my blog, may I remind those who found fault with some of his translations that it was I who chose to have a readable translation rather than his other option which was to have word for word transltion.

Unfortunately he suffered in the last years from no less than five hip operations which led to infection from which he never recovered.

You can read a little more about him on my blog at https://johncollinsnews.blogspot.co.uk/

I'm sorry to hear he's gone. Indeed a sad day. I'd also like to thank him for his work.

Let's set the record straight for Mike Senior, John. No one seeks to find inaccuracies in Mike Translations, as if there is some sort of crusade. People have pointed out when they come across them, as they should, but it seems maybe you are responsible for most of them, based on the below? ;-)

Mike is vindicated in my book. No need to carry on about the initial decision of how to translate.

Here's to Mike!

Thanks Bill and Ed.

You're right Ed, it was Mike's version of a difficult translation and there are numerous potential nuances to be taken from the original text.

And my own typos could fill a book on their own!

I note John, that in your blog you state that Mike never believed Bessler. It amazes me that one could read so much about him (Bessler) so thoroughly, and not percieve truth.

That aside, I do appreciate all Mikes work.

John Collins,

I too, am surprised that Mike didn't believe in Bessler. Do you know why?
Just seams like he would have-------------------------

It's okay; but it really surprises me. I would have thought just the opposite.
Thank goodness you did!

It's a fair comment Sam. You would have to be in the conversations we used to have. I would go over the information about the wheels and the tests and Mike would present the standard argument and then offer a series of ways he might have done it, but then he would dismiss each idea to prove his idea was wrong. He didn't dismiss Bessler's claims but he thought that he found a way to fool us. His favourite idea was that some kind of static electricity or even a crude electric motor was somehow involved., or ambient temperature changes. But he dismissed them all in the end and that is why he was so interested in Bessler, he wanted to see it to the end to find out the secret.

It's unfortunate that he wasn't able to see Bessler's work realized. Hopefully there is a Heaven so he can be watching.

Yes that is my chief regret as far as Mike is concerned. He would have thoroughly enjoyed the discomfort such a machine would have brought to the scientific elite.

Hi John

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of your friend and translator. We all own him a debt of gratitude for his work translating the old Bessler documents, which were helpful and interesting to us all.

I found the following obituary for him in the Coventry Telegraph which says he died on the 3rd of December 2016 aged 73:

"SENIOR Michael Of Hasilwood Square, Coventry Passed away on the 3rd December 2016, aged 73 years. Funeral service to take place on 3rd February at 12.45pm in Cannon Hill Chapel, Canley Crematorium. Burial to follow at Lentons Lane Cemetery. Flowers welcome. Donations if desired to Warwickshire Wildlife Trust can be sent c/o Franklin & Hawkins Funeral Directors, 333 Tile Hill Lane, Coventry CV4 9DU Telephone: 024 7647 3000"

I remember once wondering whether Mike really existed and was in fact a pseudonym of yours. I actually asked you that question in an email in 2005 and you sent me this wonderful reply (which I hope you don't mind me posting here):
John Collins in an email to Stewart wrote:Yes Mike really does exist and in fact I'm meeting him on Friday for a lunch time drink!

Funny you should think he's a figment of my imagination - but no, he's real, and of course I don't mind your question.

Mike has a degree in Botany as well as eighteenth century German.
He is also a near genius with mathematics and has been working on a number of old but well know mathematical puzzles and occasionally writes papers on them for various obscure magazines.
He provides a service for Warwickshire Museum translating German and Latin texts and also does some work of a botanical nature for them involving surveys of the area for rare plants.

He's married but been divorced for about thirty years and is a bit older than me and lives in Coventry. He is definitely not computer literate and won't consider using one and writes out all translations in longhand which makes it very tedious for me when I have to type them up! He has no mobile phone and no interest in email etc which is a bit of a bind. He used to teach but gave it up because he used to get very angry with the pupils who didn't want to work. He drives an old austin allegro which is on its second circuit of the mileometer and is very proud of the old banger. He's an anagram nut and is constantly creating anagrams out of words he comes across during the day. I showed him some I had got from an anagram web site but he wasn't impressed and regards that as cheating - he believes you have to do it yourself.

He thinks that I'm wrong about Bessler but believes Bessler was genuine. He thinks he must have use some additional external force or source of energy.

Anyway that's Mike in a nutshell!
Rest In Peace Mike.
