The steampunk site has been upgraded from Linux Debian 7 to 9.

So it has been upgraded from wheezy [7] to jessie [8] then to stretch [9].

Odd names but better than numbers.

That's a stretch! Such would make more sense when those names were in alphabetical order. Because they're not, numbers are better at conveying an upgrade. But that's what I think.

To upgrade is a risk. However linux upgrade have less risk than other operating systems.

The main driver was the SSL certification application which had problems.

So I took the upgrade path and not the uninstall / reinstalling of the application.

Application when updated are based on the current o/s.

So getting the operating system upgraded is expected by the apps maintainers.

The SSL certification system is now automatic.

Hello All

The Steampunk's support web site has been running, off and on, from August 2017.

I am thinking it's time for it go down for redevelopment.

You may visit the site during the week-end.

However If you want to contribute ideas for it's future direction then you can post here
or Private Message myself.

We have some exciting projects within this forum and they deserve our support and focus.

Best Regards

Hi All

You may find some links to Steampunk's web pages on old forum posts missing 404 error.

If you find a link you would like to view then I could get it back from archive.

The server is new and old pages are archived.

The best place to start is the current index page https://steampunks.ddns.net , hit F5 for a refresh and away you go!

Remember you may have to find a modern browser and use a PC not a mobile/table.
Low specification devices do not have a graphics card or ram to do the job.

Hi All

I appear to have some unwanted attention on my web sites.

So I think believe I need to shut them down and rebuild.

If there is any parts of the Steampunk site you want to be resurrected later then take a screen shot and post here.

I will shut the system down on Wednesday.

You will need to use http on the links to http://steampunks.ddns.net/

Maybe creating the php forum 'Bessler StarShip' was a step to far.

Hi

I believe I have found one fundamental problem with the BBS 'Bessler Starship' platform.

That is the hardware a Raspberry Pi 2 was designed to use the lowest voltage adaptor sony could get away with; at the time.

However with security update etc. The power demand increased at startup which the adaptor could not give.

I found this when build the BIOs, Kernel & OS images onto a SD card.

As these were clean the fault could only be the one above.

Saying that having a secured BBS open to the internet did cause a few script kiddies to visit. They tried profiling the site to look for security holds and create user accounts via an automated system.

Well not any more.

So those using Raspberry PI's - the first thing is try another mobile phone adapter.
And the second everything is on the SD card - Backup, wipe and reload from a good source.

The rebuild now has A+ ratted secure communication.

Great really with nothing on the site.

Reading it's possible to limit request rates.

That means if an IP address request rate is beyond fair use then it gets blocked automatically.

Now if there is a mass Denial of Service attack by multiple IP addresses then all request will be ignored. However the number of IP addresses would have to be large.

All the Best.

Hi

I am getting some steampunks.ddns.net website traffic that looks explorative in nature.

This is in line with profiling and penetration [cracking] activity.

I have a nice directive requesting indexing bots and crawlers not too bother.

So I recommend members PM when you want access.

You are OK to access https://steampunks.ddns.net to get a general update.

Any activity from IP addresses that is not member activity will be dealt with silently.

You mean past?
