That's interesting. This site won't accept imgur images

I whole-heartedly agree. Photobucket one day just decided they would like to charge money for their free service.

The problem with external links is when they eventually break your forum posts will lose their images. Better to use internal links.

I try to use both. The trouble with internal links is that there are size limits.
Images are restricted to 100 kbytes for example.

And it's more pleasant to have the diagrams embedded in the text than having to click on an attachment.

Not only that but the amount they charged was excessive. £400 odd a year.

The filesize limit for attachments is actually 3MB.

Thanks for the correction, Admin. I was speaking from memory. Sorry I got it wrong.

I'm confused. When I click on "Click to Add an Attachment" I get this:
If you do not want to add an attachment to your post, please leave these fields blank
Allowed Extensions and Sizes

Before attaching an image, please double check to make sure you're choosing the right file type:

GIF is for line drawings like you make in MSPaint
JPG (or JPEG) is for photographs
If you use the wrong file type the image size will be many times too large and will waste space and bandwidth and may make the admin angry.
Also, no matter what, if your image size is over 100Kb it is too big! It needs to be optimized for the web. There are many free tools available to do this, e.g. http://www.webresizer.com/resizer/
Does this need to be modified?

Yes, that wording is from WAY back when I was hosting the site on my home computer and needed to save disk space and bandwidth. Now it is hosted in the cloud and the size limit is 3 MB. The old wording just needs to be updated. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for alerting me to the issue.

Cheers,
Scott
