World's Largest Particle Physics Collider

Post by Joel Wright »

Work Begins on World's Largest Particle Physics Collider

GENEVA (March 7) - Installation of the world's largest particle physics collider began Monday with the lowering of a massive, superconducting magnet into the tunnel housing the new research facility that will draw scientists from all over the world.

The 50-foot-long magnet weighing 38.6 tons is the first of 1,232 the same size that will be placed in the tunnel to speed subatomic particles around the accelerator, said Renilde Vanden Broeck, spokeswoman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by the French initials CERN.

The aim is to make the particles - in this case protons - travel at nearly the speed of light until they collide, emitting a shower of even smaller particles that will reveal mysteries about the makeup of matter, Vanden Broeck said.

There will also be hundreds of other, smaller magnets, she said.

The $1.8 billion accelerator, to be known as the Large Hadron Collider, will replace an earlier, less-powerful model that was removed from the tunnel in 2000.

If it were not for the speculation, some analysts believe oil prices would fall, since there are no supply shortages. OPEC is producing about 29 million barrels of oil per day, which is above its target. There are even estimates that the Saudis will expand production. "Surplus capacity could be between 1.6 million barrels per day and 2.1 million per day," estimates Costello.

OPEC meets in mid-March in Vienna to discuss its quotas. Originally, some oil ministers had discussed cutting production since worldwide inventories have been rising. "Now, OPEC is backpedaling and might increase production," says Mr. Mueller. "They don't feel comfortable with oil above $50 a barrel because they know over the long term it starts to cause some shifts - for example, people buying more hybrid autos, which use less gasoline.".............Imagine how uncomfortable they be if some one unveiled a gravity engine.

OPEC's acting secretary-general, Adnan Shihab-Eldin, is quoted in some press reports as predicting oil will trade between $50 to $60 a barrel for the next two years before rising to $80 a barrel.

Even though gasoline prices are high, so are inventories. The cold and snowy winter in the Northeast meant that refiners were busy making home heating oil. As a result of the demand, they also produced more gasoline from the same barrel of oil.

Whats this got to do with a particle accelerator?

It means
"Keep your foot partially off the accelerator"

I understand its all about energy, but the relation between the head title ( worlds largest particle physics collider) and a totally different topic on the following thread..(ie Oil) not that I am being picky.
