cheers, as you can see I have found a picture to put up. took me a while to compress it enough to allow to be uploaded. although I know some people have larger files more than 6kb. how did they do it?

They probably link to off-site Avatars.
Take any picture on the net, run your mouse over it, right click and select properties, highlight and copy and paste the URL into the off-site avatars box in your profile.
Hope this works, but note that I haven't tried it!
