PC Firewall

Post by agor95 »

Some PC owners have the convenience of being protected by a firewall within the operating system. That gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling.

There are others who are not sure. So they buy a commercial PC firewall and switch off the default o/s version. That gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Then there are others who are not sure. So they use an opensource PC firewall.

They never have a fuzzy feeling for they are paranoid :-)

When Microsoft got the o/s to phone home when Firefox was used instead of Internet Explorer. Which firewall alerted the PC owner what was happening?

Sony place a rootkit virus to implement DRM. Which firewalls let it through without blocking?

Then we have another interesting activity. If you have a two way opensource firewall.
That means you block connections coming in and block connections out.

You have to open up ports which is a little work; however you see what is happening.

The interesting one I have seen is port 123. This is used to set your PC time to Internet time.
A master clock so to speak.

However your operating can be fixed to connect to Internet time servers owned by the o/s company.

Changing this to connect to random Internet time servers not owner by the company who supplied your o/s. That give the paranoid a warm and fuzzy feeling

Here is an example of Network Time Protocol server found in an o/s

pool ntp.ubuntu.com iburst maxsources 4
pool 0.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst maxsources 1
pool 1.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst maxsources 1
pool 2.ubuntu.pool.ntp.org iburst maxsources 2

I really like the choice what my PC is in communication.

Well it's communicating with other servers now.

None are ubuntu[canonical] or microsoft
