MT51 - Directional Latch

Post by agor95 »

Hi All

I think it would be useful to have the component on the right of the picture or a 21st century equivalent.

If there is a modern version then it needs to be gravity agnostic.
So it needs to operation in all directions.

Regards

Just a one way bearing to some.

I assume Bessler took time and effort to engrave this one way bearing.

Notice it results in an anti-clockwise rotation of the pendulum mass.
Also the latching is designed so the mechanism operates independent to direction of gravity or deceleration.

Sorry, I don't get your reasoning. It will decelerate when it pushes the wrong way against the bearing as energy is moved from pendulum to the shaft. Also, gravity doesn't affect a one way bearing, but it does affect the pendulum. As far as I can see the bearing doesn't affect that in the drawing or with a modern bearing.

Hello Tarsier79

It should be me apologising; I have spent and focused on some mountainous coding effort that has burn me out.

In effect I tried to much at the same time.

My observation that Bessler took the time and effort to engrave this one way bearing.

What is it's importance?

Naturally I looked for that importance.

Working with your reasoning which other and I will accept.

A moving mass can be decelerated when the latch engaged. Or accelerated in the other direction.
As you observe this can transfer acceleration to the pivot point or from it to the mass.

This engraving shows at latch form that is not effected by acceleration of gravity or from another source.
That may not be the case for other one way bearings.

Your phrase 'I do not care' comes to mind.

Now the question we ask. After all this time with people testing latched pendulums no one has found any benefit from it's use.

Members have presented their test with latch pendulums showing it causing rotation.
The number of rotations have been impressive but not sustained.

So again why spend the time creating this engraving for a component that does not work?

All the Best

Perhaps the same reason all the other non-working MT's were created? The component in MT51 does work as a one-way ratchet mechanism.

MT51 has two balance wheels, the flywheel has to spin at a small speed, to maintain the balance wheel, and the balance wheel is supposed to give back a little bit of energy enough to drive the flywheel... It never stops lol. 😊
I made a video on this, as already said B is game.
Not everything I present is functional, but a surprise can't be completely ruled out.Greetings.

Well we are in agreement. The MT drawings are non working examples.

And the component in MT51 does work as a one-way ratchet mechanism.

I kind of ignore MT51 as a whole device for the reasoning stated in the previous post.

But the right hand side component works in doing it's task.
