Let me stop right here before reading anymore. You're back to your same idea that the lever comes to rest horizontally, and it's not true. It's at rest, but it's at rest at any angle, and does NOT MOVE to a horizontal position. And it doesn't matter whether the weights are hung equal distances or not.
