If you can set your machine up as you described when it made the "unusual noise" if possible read the voltage on the INPUT to your regulator.This would be the machine's unregulated voltage and you can get a pretty good read of the generator's actual output. I believe what you have done is made the mechanical equivalent of an oscillator circuit using a mechanical feedback path rather than an electronic one (ie., capacitors, coils, etc). The input voltage at the regulator shopuld verify this, and don't be surprised if you put an oscilloscope at that input point that an RF frequency signal will probably show up riding on the DC (if your generators are DC output).
