This general idea of splitting the energy of a falling weight,
allowing the wheel only part of it,
was an aha for me as well. My first design uses pinballs
as weights, and energy NOT used by the wheel is re-claimed
to help get them to the center. It is my first idea, hopefully
working soon.(although only as a proof of concept, no one wants
balls clanking around a drum here...)
Although, the 6-ball system animated on the other pages is
quite nice, I see lots of friction though; and can't really see
the overbalance in the animations...
One problem I can see with the flywheel idea is this:
energy taken off the wheel by the flywheel means the
weight/wheel will turn slower (less energy)after 1/2 revolution.
The weight may not get thrown up nearly as high as it needs to for the flywheel to get it back up...maybe if the weight
is pulled in somehow too...
I also agree that less weights (1,2, or 4) HEAVY ones are better
than a lot of little ones...I have a second design using 2
linked drive weights, 1 counter weight, and one shift/helper
weight. Keep it simple, Bessler did, I'm sure of that.
I thank the group again for all these wonderful ideas!
