I have to agree completely with Anton that the noise generated by Bessler's wheels was designed to conceal the heart of his wheels. He did refer to fat horses milling around (ie, not doing any real work) in his Apologia. Weights around the outer rim would have the effect of steadying rotational speed by increasing flywheel mass, and whether or not they moved could have been irrelevant, aside from the theatrics.

Scott, thank you for providing such a fantastic forum for wheel believers. Although this is my first post, I have been diligently lurking and working in the background for some time and have a strong feeling that we are getting very close to "reinventing the wheel". To all posters, keep the faith!
