I'm not aware of any other means of suspending the wheels other than as you describe. The first exhibition was in his cousin's house, Herr Richter, in Gera and there doesn't seem to be any clues as to what means were used. That was in June 1712 but of course he got married in 1711, after he had discovered the secret and I have no idea whether his original machine had a different system to that which we know of.
