some old concepts
hi, here arre some old concepts or mock-up's i played
with in a program called "physion" , i am not vouching
for theire practicality or for physion as a test bed but
anyway thought i would share them ...
exactly how hard is it to get a free version of wm2d ?

So what kind of an application does one need to download to watch bla.zip?
Tried unzipping your file with "j.zip" and was told I needed to search for an app that would run it. Something called .scene.
It says that it has been opened 15 times, four of these were by me, with no success.

Physion is the program i used to quickly mockup some
of my random ideas ..
If you want to view them download the program
extract the zip somewhere and i guess you know the rest...
Like i said i cannot vouch for physion as a test bed
but was all i had at that moment to get a feal for
what the ideas may do in simulation .
Anyway it is the concepts that are of importance and I
Like the idea of rotation/weights altering the physical
shape of the design to bring forth ob or whatever
may be the desired result so there are some that
shows this concept however i cannot say that they
will be much of an intrest to anyone or actualy
fit for testing but yeah you are welcome to dowload
"physion" and look at it ..

Downloaded "Physion" and viewed your files as a still depiction, are these supposed to be action videos or just pictures?
Thanks for the heads up on the free Physion program, some may find it useful.

????
Your files are opening via VLC media player, showing a run time and slide bar but no motion and no big green triangle play button.
The player shows the slider moving, most files run about 10 seconds but I am not getting any motion.

i attach a image snapshot of physion,
top left hand is the blue play button (or green button or whatever color),
is it the same as what you're seeing?

Ralph , i believe you have incedently associated the
file extension .scene with vlc player but dont worry
about it. Open up physion click on the file menu
and load scene . Then browse towards the extracted scene files ..
Physion does not support the feature of opening the scene
files by clicking on them (because they arent associated like that etc) ..

Yes, I figured that out, late last night. I am now into physion home page, now I have to find your files from there.
Thanks for all your indulgence and assistance with a pr-generation PC illiterate!

re: some old concepts
I finally got Physion running again after my previous hard drive problems, and I was experimenting with rendering its output. I found your .scene files, johannesbender, and so I was just looking at and using them in the process.
Here is a gif animation from the first scene in your zip file. Hope you don't mind my doing this. I used only one out of every ten frames that Physion rendered and then used whatever the default delay rate was when I used ImageMagick's "convert" to make the gif file from Physion's .png files, so the motion we see here is actually faster than what one would see with the Physion program itself, though that could be corrected, of course.
This web page shows how to set the view window in Physion to a standard video size and how to enable the rendering of the .png files:
http://wiki.physion.net/doku.php?id=unc ... ng_a_scene
I found that I could just put those commands in a .script file, put it in Physion's "/data/scripts/" folder and then use the "File > Evaluate Script..." option in the gui to load them instead of having to type them into the console, which makes things easier in the long run.
I've uploaded the script file with those commands for the 320x240 resolution of the above .gif. (Well, I had to change the file extension to .txt to upload it to the forum. You'll have to change it back.) I'll probably edit that one to make several others with different video resolutions.
I hope this is helpful. I can also use ffmpeg on Linux to make videos, if I want. I believe all these free tools may also now be available for MS Windows, but I don't have any experience with them there.
Take care.
Dwayne
PS: Note that it seems we need to add a couple of pixels to the standard horizontal and vertical video resolutions for some reason.

re: some old concepts
no I do not mind a bit , most of these tests
I did on this software left me sceptical , and
you really cannot do much with this software .
I usually used a certain version of inventor studio
if I really wanted to draw or visualize or simulate a
concept but it is not exactly my cup of tea .
I want wm2d to see if I like it , I have emailed them asking out a bit like how long it has been under development etc , no reply from their side
but it is no biggy for me I am stil concidering
trying it out , is there any other sim out there
that would do well for trying out ideas ?
not phun though , I had phun and it cannot
be considered as a serious modeler , its way to limited when it comes to building mechanical
objects ..the editing etc.
..I am sure the tip could help people using it , it
looks fine to me if there is not a lot of motion
happening in between frame skip , raj could have
used your tip .

Hey johannesbender,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner and thanks.
Yeah, Physion seems to have its limitations, but we might be able to do a little more with it if we were to learn how to use its Java scripting. I've been looking at that some and it seems one can add features to the graphical user interface and plot data and program events and do other interesting things that normally couldn't be done through the gui alone. This, of course, would take a bit of learning - at least for me - but it might be worth the effort. I plan to at least play with it some.
Physion is essentially just a front end for the game engine Box2D, apparently, so it may not have the most accurate of calculations for the physics since it is geared for realtime games. It does use approximations for some calculations, supposedly, but that might not really be a problem for just quick mock-ups of ideas. One would want to test anything promising with a real world device, anyway.
I've not tried Working Model 2D myself nor am I familiar with Inventor Studio. I plan to stay away from commercial software, to be honest. Even if I had the money for such things, I don't know that I could justify spending it on that.
What looks like maybe some powerful free tools would be Free Cad and the combination of Blender and MBDyn. These would both be 3D simulation programs.
I've played with Free Cad some and it looks to be fairly powerful, but it would probably take some time to become proficient enough with it to be able to model things well. It seems to have its own unique user interface which isn't so intuitive. I found I pretty much needed to watch the tutorial videos to work with it.
Blender and MBDyn together may be the most powerful, but I've not tried them. It would probably take some work to get those set up and running together, too. ...and I'm also guessing it would take a while to learn how to use them.
I really don't know of much else. There are some threads in the forum discussing sim software that maybe we need to check out.
Years ago I stumbled upon a free program which might have been along the lines of what we would want, but I just can't remember what the name of it was. I guess I'll just keeping looking and hope I find it again.
I'll check at raj's threads and see if I can be of help.
Thanks again,
Dwayne

re: some old concepts
thanks , I am sure it comes down mostly to
personal preference , yes scripting is a powerful
asset , and yes it uses a game orientated physics
library wich is not geared towards exactly your
needs but if it is useful then make use of it .
I will find something , it just seems like wm2/3d
is a widely accepted tool.
