dradford, This is what I think is unique with this design. The pendulums are not transferring their weight or taking from the slider weight because they make contact from the side of the pendulums. No weight is transferred between the two. The pendulums touch nothing on the wheel except the slider weight at the glove. So the wheel is undisturbed an keeps turning as normal. I'm seeing some interesting things from this wheel. Cheers

Connected weights in a fast spinning wheel may want to stay in their position due Centrifugal force. More effort would be required to shift them than one might expect.

justsomeone, It won't spin fast. 40 to 50 RPM tops. The speed of gravity is rather slow at the earths surface.

<The term g is based on the pull of gravity. An acceleration equal to the acceleration of gravity, 980.665 centimeter-second-squared, approximately 32.2 feet per second per second at sea level; used as a unit of stress measurement for bodies undergoing acceleration.>

Cheers

Here is a free pendulum simulator that may be useful - unfortunately it doesn't measure forces at the pivot, which is what I'm looking for.

I haven't had any spare time (I have a full time job, like a lot of members here no doubt) to play with Algodoo, I'll try to spend time on it tonight.

The force transmitted through a rod that might hurt your hand is a vibration that is damped in a cord. The gravitational pull on a cord is the same as it would be on a rod. So the pivot would experience the same force in either case.
Calloway's design rests on the pendulums lifting themselves (inward against centrifugal force, not gravity since they are balanced by the opposite pendulums) in the 6-9 quadrant. Dradford's animation is not an accurate picture, imo.

eccentrically1, Would you kindly explain to us how the pendulums act on a wheel? You say in your opinion that dradfords animation is not accurate. Please tell us why. Cheers

It's not accurate because it's an animation of how he thinks the pendulums would act on a wheel.
Look at it again. Page 9. The pendulums are lifting themselves inward (around 7-8) while at the same time lifting the two sliding weights and the connecting rod.

eccentrically1, So the mistake is, the pendulums don't swing in at at 7:00 or 8:00. Correct? Cheers

Correct. Sort of. Depending on the rotation speed, they would either oscillate like normal, or swing outwards.

eccentrically1, Turn out? Completely wrong. Oscillate? You need to get a wheel with pendulums and actually see how they act. Don't put anything else on the wheel. Just pendulums. Dradford made a animation that is close enough for folks to get a good idea how the design works. It's certainly not perfect. But maybe it helped some. Cheers

Where's Crazy Dave (the pendulum wiz) when you need him. He's got some nice vids of his experiments on YouTube. Can't remember where to find them now.

His handle here is FunWithGravity2

Found one of them. MrJudgeFreed
