What is your favourite MT drawing and why?

Post by Trevor Lyn Whatford »

Hi all,

What is your favourite MT drawing and why?

MT 13 is my all time favourite because of the centre pivoting weight, this means the wheel designer can apply all sorts of internal mechanisms and to the outside observer all they can see is the wheel rotating with its shaft.

MT 55 is my second as it is a good store of parts.

MT 23 I like because what you can get out of it.

MT 51 I like just for the ratchet that is a feature of most of my builds

I first looked at MT13, MT 23, MT55 because of there axle markings, but now I find that there is some thing I missed in one of my naive builds or so I thought, I will leave that to you guy’s to tell me as I intend to post a drawing on Sunday that may be how Besslers built his wheels one direction and two direction.

I like MT30. Just the way those levers are flying up as it rotates. Would make an amazing display if it worked.

Hi DrWhat,

I designed a very simular design to MT 30 but I was going to use electric solenoids to lift the weight and then latch the weight to save energy then gravity brought them down and the cycle is repeated.

I would have loved to have seen the input to output ratio as I believe the gravity input may have been the greater especially the bigger it gets.

PS I called it the Solenoid Motor.

Regards Trevor

Edit, sorry I miss read the drawing, mine was a double ended weighted lever shot throught the middle in half cycles.

I do not like any of them except displayed on my desktop next to the crotchety scoundrel that allegedly engraved them. :-)

I wish to stand upon his shoulders only if he is in a lake over his head!

My favorite is the toys page, for (to me) it shows more clues about of the principle of perpetual motion than any of the other pages.

OK, I wasn't going to admit it, but MT 1 is my favorite too (perhaps with a dash of MT 26 thrown in just for flavor). Easy to build.
I prefer the interpretation in Maschinen Tractate, edited and published by John Collins which says, "... Even a new student of mechanics will realise that nothing can be achieved with such a construction if left just as it is.

Dear Trevor Lyn Whatford,
My prefered drawing is the MT138 (toys page).
I found a video showing exactly what it means (including the music).
Wait until 0:33 for the most important part of the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iihThOJyXIY
Please note:
- the move of the worker holding an axe (in exact opposition like in the drawing)
- the seesaw concept used by the central worker (at 0:38)
I cannot imagine why nobody though on this before, including myself? It is so simple!...

Trevor

I look at the MTs as a upper wallpaper trim in my future wheel shop. As for favorites? The classic MT1 is for that reason.

There are some ideas that possess mathematical beauty that can't be expressed in words by most. MT137 has that beauty. I could describe it yet won't. People can come to their own conclusions.
