Come on winkle! There is no definition. It is just a code Bessler used. This information in on the internet and in John Collins books. Do we need to spoon feed you? Do some Google searching. Buy some books. Educate yourself.

You asked a question. I showed you the answer. If I knew I was talking with a 13 year old kid here I might have more patients.

Jim, I didn't know you were a doctor! And am even more surprised at why you would feel that conversing with a young teenager would increase your practice.....that must be one influential 'kid' you're talking about!

Winkle, the poem wasn't that dense, I think everyone got it. In that thread I said it was a good poem.
Jim's comments were 100% helpful and correct. It's not a word, just a name. Though you may have heard the word "orphrey" before, and that is similar enough to make you feel that "orffyre" has meaning.

"drecrated" doesn't mean anything, it's not a word!

I think he means "decorated". Then again, might be "desecrated" or "desiccated"?

Winkle, "orphrey" means "decorated border", whereas "orffyre" is the output of a monoalphabetic substitution cipher (in Bessler's AP, he mentions learning kabbalah from a rabbi). Similarly, "ovyyus" is a latinization of "ovyy" which is the output of the same cipher for the input of "bill". But certaintly you don't insist that "ovyy" is a word.

Ha! wait until your lathe is delivered and you have to decrate it to set it up. It took three men and a little boy to decrate mine. :)

I have often wondered exactly why Bessler chose the name "Offyreus" and I think I have a possible reason.

Aside from the fact that "Orffyreus" can be made by substituting the letters in "Bessler" with the diametrically opposite letters in a circle made from the alphabet to get "Orffyre" and then adding "-us" to Latinize it, I think that he liked the word "Orffyreus" because it sounded like the German version of the Latin AND Greek name "Orpheus".

As you may all recall from your study of Greek mythology, Orpheus was a poet musician with magic musical powers that allowed him to entrance people with his music. When his beloved wife, Eurydice, died, he got permission to descend down into the underworld in order to use his music to lure her back to the upper world and, thus, to restore her to life. However, he was admonished that he was not to look at her while leading her back. Unfortunately, he did look at her and she was lost for good...

Orpheus' music was considered to have hypnotic powers and he is credited with certain mystic doctrines and rites that were used in the worship of Dionysus.

Because Bessler was into music and ancient literature he would certainly have been familar with the myth of Orpheus who was identified with the occult. By selecting the pseudonym of "Orffyreus", Bessler may have been trying to tell his patrons that he had special healing powers or was a student of hidden knowledge...

ken

P.S. IIRC, there was a movie made during the '50's or '60's that used the myth of Orpheus...it was called "Black Orpheus" and has been on late night television several times in the last few decades...
On 7/6/06, I found, in any overbalanced gravity wheel with rotation rate, ω, axle to CG distance d, and CG dip angle φ, the average vertical velocity of its drive weights is downward and given by:

Vaver = -2(√2)πdωcosφ

or mabe he gave us a hint about weights on opposite sides of the wheel......try this a u shaped bracket .....pipe shaped weight....with a hole drilled side to side one end....in sert bracket through weight ......attach the u bracket to edge of wheel with one side of bracket about 40 degrees lower than the other......fix in pairs......one to swing right another one to swing left.......need stops to keep them from swinging to far in...... put eight sets around wheel .....watch wheel run
