Don't forget that there are other, stronger 'clues' too, e.g. Wolff's observations (warped boards, sounds like a spring snapping up, etc.), the respected opinion of Count Karl that the design was so simple that a CARPENTER'S boy could build it. (Carpentry implies wood-working. This is an obviously easier skill than gas engineering....)
Be that as it may, it appears that even us PM 'searchers' can't agree on how he did it, which is a good thing, as it allows a diversity of ideas to be explored. Let's just say that we agree to disagree.
