True - but to lift mass M through x by allowing mass M/4 to fall through 4X is trivial!

I have always said that the only way a gravity wheel can 'harvest' energy is by the total mass*distance product downwards to exceed the totall mass*distance product upwards.

Yes, I know conventional wisdom _says_ it is impossible - but this 'impossibility' is at the heart of Bessler's wheel IMHO.

But I think this is implicit in what Bessler writes. He would not boast about a simple lifting arrangement which has a four fold mechanical advantage but no net energy differential.
