Thanks grim and Jeff, Those Lindsay books are very interesting (www.lindsaybks.com), the link you posted sent me to popup h||ll and I had to reboot. Anyhow making a gear(s) is more involved and time consuming than I thought and I dont know for sure what the correct ratio is yet. So I think I will use some coarse sand paper glued to the rims to prevent slippage, very low tech but should last long enough and be easy to change to get the ratio right.
