Hi MrTim,

'Lazy Tongs', from all that I can gather, is a scissors mechanism much like that depicted at E in MT138.

The figure A & B do not appear to fold like lazy tongs but rather, from looking at A, it folds more like an old wooden folding (collapsing) ruler (alternate side hinges). But this does not seem to fit with the elvation at B.

I'm sure this figure would be easily interpreted from an 18th Century point of view. What is it???

Thanks for your input.

Regards, ovyyus

: There is a similar device in '507 Mechanical Movements' (Lindsay Publications)
: "#144. A system of crossed levers, termed "Lazy Tongs". A short alternating rectilinear motion of rod at the right will give a similar but much greater motion to rod at the left. It is frequently used in children's toy. (etc.)"
: _/\/\/\/\_
: L\/\/\/\/R

: (Sorry, my 'picture' doesn't do it justice. The mechanism is mounted on a bracket, anchored/pivoting at the first 'X' from the right. If you pull R right, L will extend left, push R left, L will contract to the right.)
: Hope this helped.
