Let me be sure I understand you - you are saying that you built something like MT63 which was solely gravity powered, kept running, and _SLOWLY_ "beat itself to death"???
Is that correct? In other words, you made an actual physical model, not a CAD or similar...?
In which case:
-- how long did it run?
-- did it make a lot of noise?
-- how much of a start did you need to give it?
-- did you try it powering something else (i.e. take energy from the system)?
