Are these something by chance as a property of the wood, or is something there, hidden
by JB and his shading, like the amounts on some invoices I've seen that are shaded out by
a pattern like this?

They come out on a print, too. Looks like a big letter "g" or "j" in one, a line of circles (chain?)
or script letters in another, along with what looks like a another "pie" section.
