Hi Michael,
The Apologia wheel illustration was obviously created specifically, and carefully, for wider publication. It would seem that a great many of the illustrations in MT were not so carefully created, but rather appear very 'sketchy' and sometimes include mistakes.
MT is the outline for a series of lessons intended to illustrate the history of the quest for PM, what has been tried, what won't work and why, and hints at the final solution.
In actual fact I've come to view MT more like a personal diary kept by somone who knows they might have it stolen at any time and therefore remain guarded about what they include and say.
There is not really a woodgrain problem when creating a printing block as it is carved using the endgrain.

: Hi John...you wrote; As something of an expert on woodcuts Bill, do you think that JB could have made his angles look any more accurate than they are in the woodcut of the Apologia diagram, given the techniques required to reproduce such a diagram? My point, as you've probably guessed, is this - were the angles deliberately made to be 95 degrees and 25 degrees (roughly), due to his own innaccuracy and lack of care? - Unlikely I admit
: I would argue that this is possible simply from looking at some of Besslers real images from M.T. They definately are not as refined as Bills versions, and respectively look a little amaturish, taken into account of course that he was an amature artist, and the difficulty of the medium he was using-wood grain etc.
