I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on that point, Believe it or not, even for the 3 ft diameter 4 inch thick wheel, you have PLENTY of room to play around with. The only thing you have to worry about is the moving parts interfering with each other, but that's easy to fix using washers or other spacers. (Two of my test wheels are only 1.5 inches thick, and I haven't had any problems fitting mechanisms for testing.)
Of course, find that 'magic' configuration is the tough part! :)

p.s. do not discount ANY information. Even the 'spurious' blocking pegs come in handy for some designs!
