As the line is written,it could maybe mean :

Yes, springs where used,BUT NOT as all the critics suggested:
And they said that the wheel could have been wound up,
as a clockwork.

Detractors = more than one critical person.

It still would mean that springs COULD be
(one of the)the "clue"/s !!

Just pointing it out, so we don`t forget to look through
how elastic forces can be used to increase / decrease torque.

My personal belief is that the obvious lack of principles involving springs in MT(except one), could mean that the motion can be found there (50%chance), but maybe springs must replace for example ropes or be generaly used to achieve the motion/s described in MT
etc...

(I have more than one idea involving MT principles,
improved with springs to make the (total amount of)falling weights to gain enough spring energy to always keep the overbalance "refilled"....sort of...

: : Bessler, in his Apologia,in answer to a question from one of the witnesses of his wheel, said that he did not use springs in the way the questioner meant - make of that what you will. To me it seems that he meant that springs were not used as a vital part of the mechanism but more as an aid to efficient operation. So they might have been used to keep the mechanism from moving laterally for instance - or perhaps to soften impact at some point. Others, I know, believe that some kind of spring was a necessary and important part of the mechanism.

: : What is the source and context of the 6th statement in the clues section:"Springs were employed, but not as detractors suggested".
